Loosely pyramidal at first, becoming irregular, open, wide-spreading with a flat to rounded top, commonly the trunk is leaning and crooked.
30-60 feet tall with a spread of 30-40 feet
Plants are monoecious. Cones are not showy.
 
Needles are borne in fascicles of 2 and are 1-4 inches long, twisted, stiff, with finely toothed margins, blue-green in color.
 
 
Bark is orange to orange-brown, thin, smooth, peeling off in papery flakes on the upper portion of the plant, the lower trunk is gray to reddish-brown, often marbled, fissured into irregular plates.
Cones are, 1˝-3 inches long, borne solitary or in small clusters, gray or dull brown in color.
