monoecious. Staminate cones are
clustered, purplish in color, becoming
tan-brown. |

Needles are borne in fascicles of 5 and 2-3 inches
long, densely crowded on the ends of the branchlets, with smooth, entire margins, dark
green in color. |

Bark is smooth, silvery white to gray, becoming
dark brown to nearly black and deeply fissured.
Branches are very flexible, able to be tied into
knots. |

Cones are short-stalked, 3-6 inches long, erect
when young, becoming spreading, light brown in
color. |
