Japanese Red Pine
 
 

Upright, with horizontal branches and an irregular, flat-topped head, with the trunks frequently leaning.
40-60 feet tall with a similar spread.
Plants are monoecious. Cones are not showy.
 
Needles are borne in fascicles of 2 and 3-5 inches long, twisted and soft, appearing tufted, with a finely toothed margin, bright bluish-green in color.
 
 
Bark is orange to orange-red, peeling off in thin scales, eventually becoming gray and fissured into oblong plates.
Cones are short-stalked, borne solitary or in clusters, 1˝-2 inches long, dull tawny-yellow in color.
 
 

  • 'Globosa' - dwarf and globose in habit, but of vigorous growth.
  • 'Umbraculifera' - Tanyosho Pine - low, seldom much over 12 feet tall, umbrellalike with a flat top.
  • 'Oculis-draconis' - Dragon's Eye Pine - needles have yellowish bands
