Wide-spreading and open, with few massive main branches.
30-45 feet tall with a similar spread
Plants are monoecious. Flowers are small, yellowish green, in terminal panicles, not showy.
Late May to early June
Leaves are opposite, pinnately compound with 5-13 leaflets, each leaflet being 2-4 inches long, with a long acuminate apex and entire margins, lustrous dark green in color.
Fall color is yellow to bronze-yellow.
Buds are sub-petiolar
Bark is light gray, deeply fissured, developing heavy, corky ridges. Stems have prominent, raised horseshoe-shaped leaf scars, with a bright yellowish green inner wood.
Fruit is a round, black drupe, ˝ inch in diameter, with a turpentine odor when crushed, ripening in October
