Small brownish flowers are borne in thin spikes. Tovara is grown for its foliage effect and the flowers are not ornamentally important.
 
Alternate leaves are simple, ovate shaped and entire and 4-6 inches long. The dark green leaves are irregularly marbled with ivory-yellow variegation. The stems are jointed on this species.
 
Aggressive grower and may become invasive.
  • var. filiformis 'Painter's Palette' - Easily identified by the reddish V-sign that runs across the center of the leaf. New leaves are creamy white with areas of light green and pink.
