Upright, pyramidal to somewhat vase-shaped, with many horizontal or drooping branches.
25-40 feet tall with a spread of 20-35 feet
Plants are monoecious. Flowers are borne in catkins the males in clusters of 3s and visible through winter, females visible in spring.
 
Leaves are alternate, simple, 2½-5 inches long, sharply and doubly serrate.
Fall color is yellow to reddish.
Buds are small, ⅛ -¼ inch long, pointed, with many overlapping scales.
Bark is grayish brown, broken into narrow longitudinal strips loose at the ends, giving a shreddy appearance.
Fruit is a nutlet, encased in an inflated involucre, resembling hops
