Erect ephemeral perennial of moist or wet woods which usually grows in clumps

Flowers are borne in nodding clusters corolla is trumpet-shaped, about 1 inch long, with a purple tube and blue limb.
Early spring
Alternate, basal leaves elliptic to 8 inches long and 2-3 inches wide, long stalked stem leaves are smaller and nearly sessile. All leaves are glabrous and have an entire margin.
 
 
 
 
Mertensia is named for Franz Carl Mertens, a 19th century botanist.
