Irregularly upright, with a low, rounded crown of stiff, spiny, arching branches.
20-40 feet tall (up to 60 feet), with a spread of 30-40 feet
Flowers are dioecious and inconspicuous.
 
Leaves are alternate, simple, ovate, 2-5 inches long, with an acuminate tip and entire margins.
Fall color is yellowish-green to yellow.
 
Bark is dark orange brown, with irregular fissures and ridges, forming a basket weave pattern. Thorns up to 10 inches long.
Fruit is a large, rounded orange-like syncarp of drupes, 3-5 inches in diameter, covered with a warty, leathery rind, resembling a yellowish-green orange and containing a milky sap.
