A tall, loose and open, upright shrub of rounded outline.
6-12 feet tall with a similar spread.
Plants are monoecious to polygamo-dioecious. Flowers are greenish-yellow, small, not showy, borne in axillary clusters before the leaves, in early to mid-April.
 
Leaves are alternate, simple, entire, 3-5 inches long, oblong with a pointed apex and a tapering base, light green in color, fragrant when crushed.
Fall color is a clear yellow.
 
Stems are spicy fragrant when crushed.
Fruit is a scarlet drupe, ˝ inch across, ripening in September, showy.
