Vigorous and tall growing, with a straight trunk.

White flowers are very small, borne in ball-like clusters with several of the balls or clusters making up a large umbel 6-8 inches across.

Leaves that are palmately lobed with 5-7 lobes, somewhat similar to large maple leaves, as much as 7 inches across
Reddish autumn color
 
Young branches and seedlings are frequently covered with stout thorns which gradually fall off as the tree matures
Small black seeds
Apparently are not susceptible to serious insect or disease pests.
 

  • var. maximowiczii - has leaves more deeply lobed than those of the species.
