Leaves are alternate, bipinnately
compound, to 3 feet long and 2 feet wide, composed
of many leaflets, each being 2-3 inches long,
with an acute tip and entire margins. |

Fall color is yellow to
golden-brown. |

Bark is dark brown, with very
distinctive twisting, scale-like ridges and
plates. Stems are very thick, clubby with
prominent V-shaped leaf scars and superposed
buds. |

Fruit is a large,
reddish-brown, leathery pod, 5-10 inches long, 1˝-2 inches wide, ripening in October, but
persisting all winter. |
