Upright, with coarse, ascending branches forming a narrow, oval crown.
60-90 feet tall with a spread of 40-50 feet
Flowers are dioecious to polygamo-dioecious, greenish white, bone in large panicles (smaller in males).
Late May-early June
Leaves are alternate, bipinnately compound, to 3 feet long and 2 feet wide, composed of many leaflets, each being 2-3 inches long, with an acute tip and entire margins.
Fall color is yellow to golden-brown.
 
Bark is dark brown, with very distinctive twisting, scale-like ridges and plates. Stems are very thick, clubby with prominent V-shaped leaf scars and superposed buds.
Fruit is a large, reddish-brown, leathery pod, 5-10 inches long, 1˝-2 inches wide, ripening in October, but persisting all winter.
