The dark blue
corolla is trumpet-shaped, 1 inch long and has
a white throat. The corolla 15 lobed and has
pleats or appendages between the lobes. The
flower is solitary and borne on the terminal of
a short, upright stem.

The opposite leaves
are ovate, sessile to nearly clasping and ¼-1 inch long.
Gentiana was named for King
Gentius, 500 BC, who was reported to have
discovered medicinal virtues of the root of
yellow gentian, G. lutea.
