The greenish unisexual
flowers have no petals or sepals and are inconspicuous.
The showy portion of the inflorescence is created by
the 1 inch wide, brightly colored chartreuse-yellow, bracts.
Spring
Alternate leaves, oblong to 2 inches, entire,
short petioled or sessile. and oblong-ovate. The foliage
remains green during the summer and turns a dark red in
autumn. A milky sap exudes from broken stems or foliage.
Full sun and well-drained soil kept somewhat dry
The milky sap produced by Euphorbia can produce
a skin irritation similar to poison ivy on some
individuals. As a precautionary measure, gloves
should be worn when handling Euphorbia.
