Yellow, sessile,
about 1 inch wide, equaled
or exceeded by the calyx-like involucre. Flowers
resemble those of buttercup.
Late
winter to early spring.
Leaves mostly basal
from the tuber, leaves orbicular. long-petioled, palmately
dissected nearly to the base, these segments
again lobed, cauline leaf beneath the single
flower forms an involucre.
Eranthis is derived from the
Greek for spring and anthos for flower, meaning
the flower of spring. Winter aconite flowers
very early, often when snow is still on the
ground.
