Vase-shaped in youth, later broadly ovate with layered branches, medium texture
18-25 feet tall and 15-25 feet wide
Flowers with four creamy-white, pointed bracts. Bracts are broader than C. Florida and taper to a long point while C. Florida bracts have an indentation.
Late spring into summer
Opposite, simple, elliptic-ovate, 2 to 4” long, 3/4 to 1 3/4” wide.
Purple to scarlet.
 
Exfoliating bark develops a rich mottling of brown, gray and tan on older trees
Pink to red raspberry-like drupe
More resistant to anthracnose, borers and drought than C. Florida
Growth rate is slow to medium.

  • var. chinensis - Bracts are slightly larger which may be preferred over the species. 

  • 'Dwarf Pink' - Light pink bracts and only 6 to 9 feet tall.

  • 'Fanfare' - Upright, fastigiate growth.

  • 'Gold Star' - Gold bands in the foliage through spring and summer.

  • 'Madame Butterfly' - Very floriferous. Bracts bend at midpoint to resemble butterflies.

  • ' Milky Way' - Floriferous cultivar of var. chinensis.

  • 'Moonbeam' - Large, 7 to 8 inch wide flowers on long peduncles.

  • 'National' - Large, creamy white bracts and vase shaped tree with larger than normal fruit.

  • 'Rosabella' - Rose-pink bracts.

  • 'Silverstar' - Upright, arching plant with smooth bark.

  • 'Snowboy' - Gray-green leaves with creamy white margins.

  • 'Speciosa' - Dark green leaves that curl slightly at the margins.

  • 'Summer Stars' - Long lasting flowers with good fall color.

  • 'Triple Crown' - Small tree that flowers heavily.

  • 'Twinkle' - Upright growth habit with large flowers.

  • 'Variegata' - Variegated foliage.

  • 'Xanthocarpa' - Yellow fruit.
