Bulbous perennial of the shaded woodlot.
Deep blue, slightly drooping in loose racemes with 4 to 12 flowers per stem
Early spring - Often bloom through melting snow.
Closely resembles
Scilla
but differs by having a united perianth. Also close to
Puschkinia
except that Chionodoxa has free stamens.
The common name is a literal translation of the genus name from the Greek
chion
(snow) and
doxa
(glory).
