3 feet tall and 2 feet wide
The hooded pink flowers are arranged in a tightly clustered raceme found at the terminal of the stem. The fruit is an ovoid, glabrous capsule.
Late summer to early fall.
Opposite leaves are ovate to
lanceolate
. strongly serrated and 6 inches long including a 1˝ inch petiole. The foliage is glabrous and dark green.
The common name is derived from the fact that the individual flowers resemble the head of a turtle with its mouth open.
