Dense, upright plant - Perennial of streambanks and wet meadows
3 feet tall and 2 feet wide
The hooded pink flowers are arranged in a tightly clustered raceme found at the terminal of the stem. The fruit is an ovoid, glabrous capsule.
Late summer to early fall.
Opposite leaves are ovate to lanceolate. strongly serrated and 6 inches long including a 1˝ inch petiole. The foliage is glabrous and dark green.
 
 
 
 
The common name is derived from the fact that the individual flowers resemble the head of a turtle with its mouth open.
