Alternate, simple, ovate, 2 to 3 1/2” long, rounded, strongly serrated, almost dentate to base, lustrous dark green above, glaucous and pubescent on veins beneath; petiole about 1/2” long, pubescent.

 
 
Zig-zag pattern, pubescent with dotted gray-brown lenticels.
 

Most hackberries suffer from witche's broom but this species seems to be resistant.
