ovate, with a rounded or cordate base. |

Fall color is yellow-green to
yellow. |

Buds are imbricate, conical,
brown to reddish, pressed close to the stem and
curling around it, ¼-⅓ inch long. |

Bark is medium gray, smooth and fluted, becoming rough and scaly at
maturity. |

Fruit is a nut, ¼ inch long,
borne at the base of a bract. |

- 'Columnaris' - narrow columnar tree,
almost egg-shaped - erroneously called 'Fastigiata '.
- 'Fastigiata' - upright in habit,
branching more vase shaped as the tree grows
older.
