Sturdy clump of erect, unbranched stems with coarse leaves
3-5 feet tall with a spread of 2 feet
Purplish-blue, bell-shaped flowers are borne in upper leaf axils or in short, terminal racemes. Flowers are 1˝ inches long with campanulate corollas.
Early summer
Alternate leaves are oblong-ovate to lanceolate, lower leaves are petioled, 5-6 inches long while the upper leaves are smaller and become sessile higher on the stem. The leaves are rugose, pubescent and have a double-toothed margin. Stems have scattered hairs.
 
Partial shade in well-drained soil
  • 'Alba' - White flowers similar to the species.
  • 'Brantwood' - Large, violet-blue trumpet flowers.
  • 'Gloaming' - An Alan Bloom introduction unusual smoky-blue color.
  • var. macrantha - Larger flowers than the species.
  • var. macrantha'Alba' - White flowers, plant similar to 'Alba.
