Almost blackish
green leaves are arranged alternately along the
slender stems. The basal leaves are large, long-petioled, egg-shaped and attached at
the wide end to the petiole. The leaf apex is sharply
pointed and the base is shallowly lobed (cordate). Leaf
size and petiole length diminish with the height of the
stem until the upper leaves are about ½ the size of
the basal leaves and are very short petioled or lack a
petiole (sessile). After the plant flowers, the leaves
increase in size until they are 8 inches wide by
midsummer, giving the plant a somewhat coarse
appearance. |
