Upright, oval-headed, with an open crown.
60-75 (up to 90) feet tall with a spread of 30-40 feet
Plants are monoecious. Flowers are borne in catkins the male catkins are pendulous, while the females are upright.
 
Leaves are alternate, simple, 3-5 inches long, ovate with a serrate margin, dull dark green in color.
Fall color is yellow.
 
Bark is yellowish or silvery gray, separating into thin flakes, with prominent horizontal lenticels, becoming
reddish brown on older trunks, with ragged-edged plates. Stems have a wintergreen fragrance when crushed.
