Leather Bergenia aka Pigsqueak
Siberia and Mongolia

 

Perennial of alpine or forested slopes and rocky streams.
 
Pink flowers borne on a red scape well above the foliage. Rarely sets viable seed.
Spring
Large, leathery textured leaves that are evergreen although they do get damaged in climates with very cold winters.
 
 
 
The common name, pigsqueak, is supposed to come from the sound made by rubbing the foliage between the thumb and forefinger.
