Tuberous begonias produce some of the most spectacular colors in the garden. Many, many cultivars of tuberous begonias are available in a wide number of usually bright colors and different flower types. These are tender perennials and need to be taken inside and stored over the winter in temperate regions.
The species types had small flowers but plant breeders have taken these modest plants and created all types of plants. Some of them have flowers several inches wide.

The camelia flowered group have double blossoms with smooth or ruffled edges to the petals. In some cases, the edges will be a contrasting color to the center.

A second group, the carnation flowered begonias, generally have smaller blooms but also in a wide range of colors. Many of them are of pendulous in nature and make great hanging basket plants.

A few types have been developed that have flowers that resemble roses. These are most commonly found in rose to pink colors and the flowers stand up above the foliage.

Multiflora begonias are more compact and resemble the larger types in everything except size. They tend to be more tolerant of heat and direct sunlight that some of the others which prefer light shade.
