Stiffly upright, multi-stemmed shrub or small tree, with a short trunk and spreading branches, with a dense pyramidal or round-topped head, tending to spread by suckers.
15-20 (up to 30-40) feet tall with a spread of 10-20 feet
Flowers are maroon-purple, 1-2 inches wide, with 6 petals, the outer three being much larger, borne singly and downward facing
Early to mid-May
Leaves are alternate, simple, entire, 6-12 inches long, oblong with a pointed apex and a tapering base.
Fall color is yellow-green to yellow, poor.
Buds are naked, pubescent, reddish-brown in color.
Stems have an offensive smell when broken.
Fruit is an elongated to roundish, greenish-yellow berry, 2-5 inches long, edible, with a banana-like flavor, ripening in late September-early October
