Hybrid Columbine |
3-9 |
Erect plant |
1-3 feet by 12 inches spread |
Flowers terminate the branch, hanging or erect
long hollow nectariferous backward-projecting spurs of
the 5 petals and 5 sepals, colored like the petals, usually
much shorter than the petal-spurs. Colors are red, pink,
yellow, blue, white, or purple. |
Late spring to early summer |
2-3 ternately compound apex of each leaflet
deeply incised, petiole long and softly pubescent.
Foliage has a gray-green color. |
Serpentine and blotch leaf miners often disfigure the
leaves of columbine with their mines. Hand-picking or
spraying with insecticides when the mines are first seen
holds them in check. Columbine aphid and the
caterpillars of a skipper butterfly are occasional pests. |
