Aquilegia alpina
Alpine Columbine
Switzerland - Northern Europe

18-30 inches tall
Nearly solid blue flower with short, hooked spurs

Leaves are deeply divided into narrow lobes
Serpentine and blotch leaf miners often disfigure the leaves of columbine with their mines. Hand-picking or spraying with insecticides when the mines are first seen holds them in check. Columbine aphid and the caterpillars of a skipper butterfly are occasional pests.

  • var. alba - White flowers
  • var. superba - Similar to the species but more vigorous and larger than the species
  • 'Hensol Harebell' - Deep blue flowers, 3 feet tall. It is a hybrid of A. alpina x A. vulgaris.
