Rhizomatous perennial of sandy shorelines, damp prairies
and wet meadow lands
White, 5 petaled
flowers followed by round balls of fruit - the
numerous pistils which are arranged in rounded
heads, ripen into flattened achenes with short,
straight, strongly appressed hairs.
Stem leaves are
palmately divided and sessile.
The white petaloid
flowers are generally larger than those of A.
virginiana. This species is closely
related to the windflower, A. blanda.
