Alternate, simple, 2 to 4” long, 3/4 to as much in width, broad-ovate to roundish, abruptly acuminate, cordate at base, finely serrate, glabrous above, lustrous dark green, lighter beneath with brownish tufts in axils of veins; petiole 1/2 to 1 1/2” long, slender, glabrous.
 
Shiny brown in young trees.
 
Egg shaped strobile 1 to 1 1/4 inch long by 3/4 inch wide. The largest of the cultivated alders.
