Upright, open, finely branched, with a rounded head.
20-30 feet tall with a spread of 15-25 feet
Flowers are monoecious, greenish, bone in a cyme, few in number, not important.
 
Leaves are opposite, trifoliolate, 3-6 inches long, with the middle leaflet short stalked, coarsely toothed, with a pubescent petiole.
Fall color is russet, bronze, to red.
⅛ inches long, brownish-black, apex pointed, margin of scales pubescent.
Bark is exfoliating, a beautiful cinnamon to red-brown in color, outstanding. Stems are slender, pubescent at first, developing the thin, papery, cinnamon-brown exfoliation on 2-3 year old stems.
Fruit is a samara, not ornamentally important, rarely viable.
