Usually an upright
tree form. (Also found as a dwarf, shrub form)
15 to 30 feet - Slow growing.
Needles about 1/2 to 3/4 inch in length which are
notched or rounded at the tips. They are dark green with
two whitish bands on the bottom side divided by a thin,
green midrib.
Slightly more
tolerant of hot summers than some other firs.
‘Horstmanns Silberlocke’ -
irregular branching form with the needles curling up
and revealing the bright silver lower surface.
‘Prostrata’ - rich green, low
growing type.
The shrub
form, to me anyway, should be used in those places where
the common yew has
been traditionally located. The foliage is much nicer
than the yew in may respects.
