This genus contains about 120 species of herbaceous perennials. They are primarily native to North America with a few from other parts of the world.

Some people may blame goldenrod for their allergies but they are actually thinking of another plant called ragweed (Ambrosia species). Goldenrods actually make some nice landscape plants with their tall yellow spikes of flowers.
