Hosta 'Ulysses S. Grant'

A slow growing cultivar of unidentified parentage, this hosta was registered by Peter Ruh of Ohio in 2001 on behalf of the originator, Hajime Sugita of Japan. The large size, semi-upright mound grows to about 26 inches in height with a spread of 51 inches. The leaves are broadly ovate, heavily corrugated, wavy and have thick substance. It bears semi-bell-shaped flowers of very pale lavender in July.

According to The Hostapedia by Mark Zilis (2009), "This is one of my favorites in Peter Ruh's series of hostas honoring American Presidents...It would be a great choice for the center of an island bed due to its size and mound habit."

From the Field Guide to Hostas by Mark Zilis (2014), "...considered the number one in Peter Ruh's series..."

Ulysses S. Grant was the 18th president of the U.S. from 1869-1877.
