A seedling of unidentified parentage, this cultivar was registered in 1989 by
Peter Ruh of Ohio on behalf of the originator,
David Stone of Connecticut and
Piedmont Gardens. It is a medium size hosta with leaves
that start the spring gold and change to green by
midsummer. The foliage is ovate shaped and has thin
substance. Lavender flowers bloom in July.
According to
The Hostapedia by Mark Zilis (2009), "...formerly known as 'Verdi Valentine' and 'Verde
Valentine'...forms a symmetrical mound of
H. nakaiana-type
foliage."
In
The
Hosta Journal (1992 Vol. 23 No. 1) there is an
article by Peter Ruh about the so-called David Stone Medium or Miniature hostas which went by a numbering system that
started with
DSM. This cultivar was called DSM #14 and
was described as "Small, originally known as H. 'Verdi Valentine'. Leaves bright yellow in spring, turn
yellow-green by mid-summer, flowers lavender."
