Alex Malloy of New York registered this
cultivar of unidentified parentage in 2000. It is a small size plant with
ovate shaped, slightly wavy foliage. Purple flowers bloom in
July. According to
The Hostapedia by Mark Zilis (2009), "...often has been spelled as 'Springarn's
Japan'. It seems almost identical to
H. venusta in both
foliage and flower, probably being a seedling of it."
Named for Eleanor (Ellie) Brinckherhoff Spingarn.
