This cultivar has
H. venusta in its background and it
originated in
Japan. The miniature
(3 inches high by 7 inches wide) size mound has green
foliage with creamy yellow to white marginal variegation. Its
widely elliptic leaves have smooth texture and average substance. Purple flowers
bloom in early July.
The Book of Little Hostas by Kathy and Michael
Shadrack
(2010) says: "Needs special care but once mature will do well in a
container or trough."
The New Encyclopedia of Hostas by
Diana
Grenfell (2009) states in its Miniature Hostas chapter: "More vigorous
than H. 'Cat's Eye', but
still needs special care and attention. Grow in a container for
several seasons to allow a good root system to develop...A
superb, tiny, rapidly growing hosta but still very rare. It has
been known in
Japan since the early 1990s but only reached the
United States about 10 years later...The rigid leaves have a
very perky appearance."
Mikiko Lockwood in an article on The Hosta Library titled,
A Little About Japanese Hosta Terms defines the term otome as maiden, 'Otome Gibōshi' or
H. venusta and the term fukurin as margined or edged. |
