A seedling of H. 'Katsuragawa Beni', this cultivar was registered by
Arthur Wrede of Maryland in 2005. It
forms a medium size clump with leaves that are ovate shaped,
deeply veined and slightly wavy. The petioles are deep reddish
purple. It bears pale purple flowers in August.
This
cultivar won the 2004
Mildred Seaver Award at the First Look hosta competition as the best seedling as chosen by the Attendees.
Mikiko Lockwood in an article on The Hosta Library titled,
A Little About Japanese Hosta Terms defines the term
beni as red or rouge and the the term -gawa or -kawa as river.
