In 1987, Peter Ruh of Ohio registered this plant of unidentified parentage on behalf of
the originator,
David Stone of Connecticut. It is
probably an
H. nakaiana type and was formerly known as H. 'Spring Gold'.
It forms a medium size hosta about 14 inches high
which spreads to about 32 inches in width with very slightly
wavy leaves of average substance. Bright purple flowers bloom in
July and the seed pods are red dotted.
This cultivar was named by
Eunice
Fisher after her daughter, Hazel.
In
The
Hosta Journal (1992 Vol. 23 No. 1) there is an article by Peter Ruh about the so-called David Stone Medium or Miniature hostas which went by a numbering system that started with
DSM. This cultivar was
called DSM #1 and was described as "Rapid multiplier, medium small,
canary-yellow leaves in spring and summer, turns yellow-green in fall. Flowers
lavender-purple."
