Hosta 'Blue Eyes'

This is one of the many confusing situations that occur because of conflicting or duplicate names in hostas. The "official" H. 'Blue Eyes' is the registered cultivar shown above in images provided by the originator, Robert Herman.

Pictured below is a non-registered plant by the same name which was introduced by Dr. Ralph (Herb) Benedict.

This plant was registered by Robert Herman in 1996. It grows 5 inches high by 12 inches wide with medium blue-green leaves. 'Blue Eyes' bears tubular, lavender flowers in July on scapes 18 to 22 inches tall.

According to The Hostapedia by Mark Zilis (2009), "I've never seen this plant, but it is notable for being a blue-green H. venusta type."

The plant shown below is a non-registered cultivar from Dr. Ralph (Herb) Benedict of Michigan which bears this same name. It is a Tardiana-type seedling which grows into a small size hosta about 9 inches in height and 15 inches wide. The image was take at Wade & Gatton Nursery.

Zilis (2009) says this about the Benedict cultivar "...it is an unofficial name that will have to be changed...Herb Benedict's "Blue Eyes" has been on display in the Wade & Gatton collection for at least 16 years."
