Hosta 'Barney Fife'

This 1993 registrant from Tony Avent of Plant Delights Nursery in North Carolina is the result of the cross, H. 'August Moon' × H. 'Tardiflora'. It forms a small size, 13 inch high mound that is about 33 inches wide. The leaves are shiny, slightly wavy and with good substance. Leaf petioles have purple dots. Lavender flowers bloom in late August.

Deputy Barney Fife was a character on the Andy Griffith Show on TV in the late 1950s and into the 1960s. It was played by Don Knotts.

In an article about hybridizing by Tony Avent in The Hosta Journal (1996 Vol. 27 No. 1),  Tony gives the following comments on cultivars he has introduced: "H. 'Barney Fife' - brother to above (H. 'Andy Taylor')...nearly pink flowers."
