This cultivar is a form
of H.
longipes var latifolia which was found in
Japan by
Hajime Sugita of Japan. It forms a small size hosta with green foliage that has
a very wide gold medial (center) variegation. The leaves
are slightly rippled, shiny on top and on the bottom. It
is viridescent in that it turns all green as the season
progresses. Purple flowers bloom in September. Mikiko Lockwood in an article on The Hosta Library titled,
A Little About Japanese Hosta Terms defines the term nishiki as brocade (rich-colored woven fabric) i.e.
something colorful and beautiful.
