This seedling selection of unidentified parentage came from
Japan and was registered in 2010 by
Peter and Jean Ruh of Ohio. It grows into a medium size plant about 16 inches high
by 32 inches wide. The leaves are dark green with
reddish petioles. Burgundy purple flowers with stripes
bloom from August into September.
According to
The Hostapedia by Mark Zilis (2009), "No, this is not the long sought red-flowering hosta,
but it does produce flowers with burgundy overtones...Jim Hawes grew this plant from seed that he had obtained from a
source in
Japan."
The
Hosta Journal, (2016 Vol. 47 No 1) states, "A
number of unique seedlings from Japan have been passed
around for some time, primarily among hybridizers. Both
have solid green foliage but with flowers that have a
reddish shade. H.
'Akane' has burgundy flowers while 'Kokuryu' has reddish purple flowers. Both are rare and may in
fact no longer exist in the U.S...."
