In 1577, a "garden of simple plants"
was established at this site thus becoming the first
botanical garden in Paris. In 1626, it became the jardin
de plantes médicinales and later the jardin du Roi.
The garden was first opened to the
public in 1640. During the French Revolution, a zoo was
established also. Now, there is a mineralogy museum,
paleontology museum and entomology museum in the garden. It
also houses the Grande Galerie de
l'Evolution.
