Originally opened in 1804, Père-Lachaise
has grown into the largest and most famous of the cemeteries in
Paris. There are now over 70,000 burial plots which attract over
2 million visitors each year. The 90 acre site contains over
5,300 trees.
Among the many famous people buried here
are: Honoré de Balzac, Sarah Bernhardt, Maria Callas, Frédéric Chopin, Edouard Daladier, Molière, Jim Morrison, Yves Montand, Édith Piaf, Marcel Proust, Gertrude Stein, Alice B. Toklas
and Oscar Wilde.
