This
tissue culture sport of H. 'Gold Regal' was
originated by
Mark Zilis of Illinois and registered by
Peter Ruh of Ohio in 1999. It is a large size plant growing to about 19
inches in height with a spread of 45 inches. The leaves are
narrow, gold colored with a white marginal variegation. Its
foliage is ovate, moderately corrugated and sometimes cupped.
Lavender flowers bloom in July.
According to
The Hostapedia by Mark Zilis (2009), "To avoid any potential problem with the drawstring effect,
divide 'Ugly Duckling' every three or four years to keep it in
the juvenile state and don't over-fertilize."
