An H. 'Tokudama' type cultivar of unidentified parentage, this cultivar from Japan was imported by Gus Krossa of Michigan and registered by Peter Ruh of Ohio in 1981. It forms a large size (27 inches high by 36 inches wide) mound of heavily corrugated foliage with thick substance. It bears near white flowers in dense clusters from late June into July followed by viable seeds.

According to The Hostapedia by Mark Zilis (2009), this cultivar "...does not reach the proportions of most H. 'Sieboldiana'-types, and could be a hybrid of H. 'Sieboldiana' x 'Tokudama' or a seedling of 'Tokudama' itself. Peter Ruh named it for a street near Gus Krossa's home, though it really was spelled "Samual"."

The New Encyclopedia of Hostas by Diana Grenfell (2009) states: "Very heavy bloom makes the leaf color exceptionally blue, so shade is essential. Slow to establish...A classic older introduction but never bettered."
