A hybrid of the species
H. yingeri x
H. rectifolia, this non-registered cultivar is from the
Barry Sligh Kiwi Series of hostas. The
large size mound is 28 inches high by 43
inches wide. Its foliage is wavy, shiny and the leaves are
folded lengthwise. They have a whitish underside and winged
petioles. From late July into August, it produces bright purple
flowers on six foot tall scapes.
According to
The Hostapedia by Mark Zilis (2009), "Early in the season, its shiny, waxy, dark green foliage
attracts your eye. Then, it flowers...wow!...and you realize how
'Kiwi Leap Frog' got its name. As they unfurl, the six foot long
scapes arch and trail across the garden as if they were
searching for an escape route. The brilliant purple flowers add
further emphasis to this unusual trait."
