This cultivar is a named after a native American Chief named Tom Jelloway from Knox County, Ohio and is part of Van Wade's American Indian Series of hostas.

Hosta 'Jelloway' is a sport of H. 'Striptease' which forms a medium size mound that bears lavender flowers in July.
