This is a
tetraploid form of H. 'Tokudama' which originated from
Dr.
Shuichi Hirao of
Japan. It was
registered
by
Peter Ruh of Ohio in 1997. It forms a large
size, blue-green mound
about 24 inches tall with a spread of 58 inches. The leaves are
highly corrugated and have a very thick substance. Near white
flowers bloom from late June into July.
This cultivar is part of the "Hirao
Series" of hostas.
According to
The Hostapedia by Mark Zilis (2009), "Imagine an oversize, floppier version of 'Tokudama' and
you have 'Hirao Zeus'."
In
Greek mythology, Zeus was considered the king of the
gods. He had control of the sky, weather, law and
fate.
