Hosta 'Fragrant King'

Originated by Jan van den Top of the Netherlands and registered on his behalf by Registrar, Gayle Hatley Alley for The American Hosta Society in 2019. This sport of a streaked form of H. 'Fried Green Tomatoes' is an upright growing, large size hosta about 22 inches high by 46 inches wide. The foliage is "deep" yellowish green with a creamy white marginal variegation.

Its leaves are slightly shiny on top, broadly ovate, very slightly convexly cupped and have widely spaced, prominent veins. Near white, fragrant flowers bloom in August on scapes up to 25 inches tall followed by seeds whose viability was unknown at the time of registration.

The registration materials state: "...Foliage looks good well into autumn and celadon streaks in the transition area between the leaf and margin colors give it an elegant look...emerges with yellow margins that turn creamy white by June."

In an article in The Hosta Journal (2016 Vol. 47 No 2), the author described this plant's flowers as having a "Strong" fragrance compared to other hostas.
